Summer’s Path by Scott Blum

Summer’s Path by Scott Blum

I have read many, many books in my time but none so bizarre as this one.  It’s also the first audio-book I have ever listened to (no, I haven’t been living under a rock?. A friend suggested I download a couple of audios as a distraction from the headaches – I don’t think this was quite what she had in mind though…my bad!!!)

The story started off decently enough opening with a moving scene but you quickly plow head first into the bizarre and sublime as we explore why suicide is Don’s only option.  I was also somewhat offended by the author’s suggestion that disease exists because of a person’s (soul’s) suppressed feelings and its inability to deal with these thereby intimating that diseases like cancer have been brought on through some fault of our own…perhaps that’s just my own simplistic and over-sensitive interpretation of the text.

The book touched on some big topics and there seemed to be a couple of threads of wisdom and alternative thinking that were worthy of exploring – it’s unfortunate that these inspired pearls of wisdom were downplayed by a weak narrative which could have been overlooked had Don’s soul not taken a break from his cancer-riddled body by  inhabiting the body of a newborn puppy!  It was difficult to take any ‘pearls’ seriously after that.

I’m usually up for reading anything but, unfortunately, this one was definitely not for me and for that reason I’m giving this book ONE COFFEE CUP ☕
