Round the Moon by Jules Verne
Round the Moon by Jules Verne
Round the Moon is the sequel to Jules Verne’s From the Earth to Moon, both books written in the late 19th Century. Apart from the title of the sequel being a total spoiler alert there’s nothing much more that I can say…
Jules Verne is obviously respected as one of the original science fiction authors and the novels were written long before the journey to the moon was actually accomplished, however, it is completely riddled with mathematical and scientific jargon, long-winded descriptions and some of the blandest dialogue. I can genuinely say that I ‘suffered’ through this book (I was giving it the opportunity to redeem itself…) and, this time, I won’t be running out to gather any more Jules Verne books to add to my collection!
So unless you are a serious Vernean/die-hard science fiction fan and/or a huge fan of maths and science as a story, move on…this book is not where it’s happening!
Apart from the spoiler alert that is the title, the story picks up where we left off with the prequel.
“Often referred to as “The Father of Science Fiction,” Jules Verne wrote many fanciful tales. But, in 1870, he wrote a forward-looking sequel to his tale about space travel using surprisingly accurate calculations. The Baltimore Gun Club had launched a manned projectile all the way to the moon, but that was where his 1865 story had ended, leaving readers to wonder at their fate. Can they make it to the moon and back? Find out in this prophetic, classic story, amazingly similar to the Apollo missions nearly a century later.” (source)
