A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
I enjoy books that are unconventional and a little bit different and I normally come across these through word-of-mouth. A fabulous, fabulous, fabulous book that’s so enjoyable in its uniqueness that it’s memorable too!
Ove is a treat; a grumpy character who relies heavily on routine, principles and following the rules. His neighbours don’t care much for him and tend to give him a wide berth and he has longstanding feuds with a number of them. That is until a new family moves in next door…
Behind Ove’s bristly character is a truly touching story about love and loss, loneliness and desperation. It’s funny and it’s heartwarming and you fall in love with the character not despite his ways but because of them.
‘At first sight, Ove is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks himself surrounded by idiots – neighbours who can’t reverse a trailer properly, joggers, shop assistants who talk in code, and the perpetrators of the vicious coup d’etat that ousted him as Chairman of the Residents’ Association. He will persist in making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets.
But isn’t it rare, these days, to find such old-fashioned clarity of belief and deed? Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so?
In the end, you will see, there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible…‘ (source)
